Yes, Virginia, there is a perfect Web page

Is there really one ideal way to do Web pages—a definitive “best practice”? And if there is, does that mean that all pages should basically look alike? What about creativity and innovative design? Steve Krug, author of Don’t Make Me Think, will explain why he’s become convinced that there actually is a short list of design conventions that make some Web pages inherently better than others—things that very few sites get right, even though they’re not all that hard to do. Besides spelling out his vision of the perfect Web page, Steve will also present his brand new Site Navigation Identification Chart: a handy tool that classifies the different ways to do navigation and helps you choose the best one for your site.

Steve Krug evaluates and improves interfaces for a wide variety of clients, primarily in online services and the Web, including Apple, AOL, Netscape, BarnesandNoble.com, and Lexus.com. In workshops based on his book, Don’t Make Me Think, he helps people think like a usability expert and make low-cost/no-cost testing an everyday part of the design process. From South Seattle/SeaTac Airport via I-5:

* Follow I-5 North all the way through downtown Seattle (DO NOT take the Express lanes).
* After you pass the exit for Hwy 520, take EXIT # 169 to NE 45th St. & NE 50th St.
* Stay RIGHT on the off-ramp for NE 45th St., but then quickly MOVE TO THE LEFT-HAND lanes in order to turn left on NE 45th St. at the light.
* Turn LEFT onto NE 45th St. and cross over the freeway, heading West on NE 45th St. for about a mile (about 8 traffic lights, just after Olympia Pizza).
* Turn LEFT onto Stone Way and head South about 10 blocks.
* Go STRAIGHT through the light at NE 34th St. and then take the very NEXT RIGHT onto Northlake Way.
* After a couple of blocks, the road will narrow and make a slight turn to the left as you come up to a STOP sign. * There are two buildings in front of you, the meeting presentation is being held in the building on the right, furthest from the water, with the brick and gold exterior.

If you are familiar with the Lake Union/Fremont area:

* Take Westlake around Lake Union (past Rock Salt restaurant and Q13 studios).
* Turn RIGHT on Fremont Ave.
* Cross the Fremont Bridge, then take the next RIGHT onto NE 34th St.
* Turn RIGHT on Aurora Ave. N. (directly under the Aurora Bridge).
